Celebrating Differences

Our differences should be celebrated because people would know the differences and learn to be tolerant.  Then they would be tolerant every time.  Beginning is an easy thing to do because all you have to do is not hurt people’s feelings.  They would hurt you back, so don’t mess with people if you don’t want to get hurt.

I think they should celebrate our differences because they would respect other students or teachers, they won’t tease you or others, and they are going to learn to respect adults.

Ways to Respond to a Bully

I think the best way to respond to a bully is by acting like whatever way you’re being bullied doesn’t affect you.  If the bully knows it’s affecting you, he will keep doing it to make you mad.  You could try and become friends with them or try and figure out why they bully. You could just try to act nice to everyone and just try not to get in fights.

What is the best way to respond to a bully?

–          Not to talk to them.

–          Respect them, and they will respect you back.

–          Act different from your parents and teachers.

–          Make yourself respectful.

–          Stop bullying people and they won’t bully you.

–          If you give them respect, they will give you respect.

–          Make changes over all the students in a school.

–          If a student asks you a question, respond to it – that is how you get respect from others.

Tell Us About A Time When You Were Bullied

When I was bullied, it happened at school. I don’t know why they bullied me. I think they bullied me because I am African and they think I stink.  They were teasing me and making fun of me.  Some other students hate me in my class but I don’t care if they hate me. Sometimes they are my friend, and I try be their friend. But the next day they are not your friend again.  When I bought gum, they asked me if they could have a piece of gum. I didn’t give any to them because they are only my friend when I have gum and when I don’t have gum, they’re not my friend.

That was a time when I got bullied.  Thank you.

What Makes You Unique?

Our differences should be celebrated because if we all liked the same thing then it would be a pretty boring world.  If we all liked the same style of clothes then we would all be wearing the same outfit, if we all liked the same music then that’s all we would hear, and if we all liked the same sports team then none of it would be interesting at all.  If everybody liked the same things, it would be like 100 million you’s walking around and that’s not fun.  So, people should celebrate or at least be tolerant of other people’s differences.

We asked friends all over Pittsburgh, “What makes you unique?”  Some of their answers are in this video.  Watch it here, and then tell us – What makes YOU unique?

Welcome to the Tolerance Toolkit!

A group of young people in Pittsburgh are building this website about tolerance, respect and acceptance.  This project seeks to eliminate barriers and challenge Pittsburghers to raise their tolerance levels, open their hearts, and accept people as people. Through a project that involves sharing stories and understanding similar struggles, our communities will learn that we are not so different after all.

To us, the Tolerance Toolkit is about:
–          Treating others they way you would like to be treated.
–          Respecting others and earning their respect in return.
–          Helping others to do well with their education.
–          Stopping bullies and helping kids who are bullied.
–          Teaching people around the city to know more about each other.

But we want to know – what do YOU think?  What does “Tolerance” mean to you?   Comment below or share a video response.  Tolerance is about listening to each others’ ideas, so we want to hear yours.
